2010 Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Activities Briefing Northeast Regional Meeting

The Northeast Energy and Commerce Association and the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology hosted a Regional Meeting for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Activities on July 22, 2010 in Westborough, MA. This Regional Meeting brought together key stakeholders from the Northeast states to discuss project analysis, incentives, funding mechanisms, and regional fuel cell initiatives. Attendees included over sixty local municipal and state leaders, planners, energy professionals, end users, researchers and business leaders that have interest in using advanced hydrogen and fuel cell technology to reduce energy costs, improve environmental performance, and increase efficiency.

Joel Rinebold, Director of Energy Initiatives at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. moderated the Regional Meeting that consisted of both a state/federal panel and a hydrogen/fuel cell industry panel. The state/federal panel discussed their efforts, activities being undertaken to reduce barriers, short and long term plans, and where/how support could come from state, federal, and private resources . Carole Read from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fuel Cell Technologies Program provided an update on Recovery Act Investments in Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies. Other members of the state/federal panel included Anne Margolis, Clean Energy States Alliance; Richard Smith, Maine Hydrogen Energy Center; Keith Frame, Connecticut Clean Energy Fund; and Charlie Myers, Massachusetts Hydrogen Coalition.

The industry panel each presented information on their company, the products being developed, markets, examples of deployment, barriers, and activities that could reduce these barriers. Members of the industry panel included Frank Wolak, FuelCell Energy; Mike Brown, UTC Power; Thomas Jackson, Avalence; Steve Szymanski, Proton Energy Systems; Brad Bradshaw, Hy9; and Stephen Marlin, General Motors.
